HYPERPIGMENTATION
Dark spots and freckles may be harmless, but they make our complexion look uneven, and some may feel very self conscious. It isn’t always easy to cover up an uneven skin tone with makeup, and we shouldn’t have to.
Clinically referred to as hyperpigmentation, dark spots can be caused by over exposure to the sun, acne scars, or simply just changes in our hormones. In middle age, we sometimes hear people referring to these as “age spots” or “liver spots”. They are most common on the backs of the hands, back, shoulders, and face.
Melanin is what gives our skin, eyes and hair their colour. Hyperpigmentation is the over-production of melanin or colour in random sizes on areas of high sun-exposure on our skin. While the discolouration may be harmless, individuals often feel they don't look like themselves as it builds up over time and it is hard to conceal. There are several home remedies people use to help reduce the appearance of dark spots, but at Skinfidelity, we recommend glycolic chemicals peels, or microneedling for a safer and more permanent treatment to reduce hyperpigmentation.
Glycolic chemical peels use alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). These treatments stimulate collagen production and exfoliate the skin, improving the overall tone and complexion. |
