Tear Trough Filler Gone Wrong: Puffiness, Blue Tint and How It's Corrected

The under-eye area is one of the most delicate parts of the face, and one of the most common areas we're asked to correct. Tear trough filler can look beautiful when it's the right choice, the right product and the right amount. When it isn't, it can leave you looking puffier or more tired than before. If that's you, here's what may be happening and what can be done.

Sometimes the most natural result under the eyes comes from doing less, or from treating somewhere else entirely.

Common Under-Eye Filler Concerns

  • Puffiness or swelling that doesn't settle, or comes and goes, often worse in the morning
  • A ridge, roll or "sausage" under the eye
  • Lumps you can see or feel
  • A bluish or grey tint under the skin
  • Under-eyes that look heavier than they did before filler

Why Tear Trough Filler Can Go Wrong

The skin under the eyes is thin and the anatomy is complex. Hyaluronic acid draws in water, so even a modest amount of filler here can hold fluid and look puffy for some people. Filler placed too superficially, too much product, or a product that's too firm for the area can all cause problems, and filler under the eyes can last much longer than many people expect.

Not everyone is a good candidate for tear trough filler in the first place. Hollows caused by volume loss in the cheeks, puffy under-eye bags, or pigment-related dark circles often need a different approach.

What Is the Tyndall Effect?

The Tyndall effect is the bluish tint that can appear when hyaluronic acid filler sits too close to the surface of thin skin. Light scatters through the filler, giving a blue-grey shadow. It doesn't usually go away on its own quickly, but because it's caused by hyaluronic acid filler, it can often be improved by dissolving.

How Under-Eye Filler Is Corrected

We start by looking closely at the area in different lights and positions, and at how the under-eyes relate to the cheeks and the rest of the face. If the problem is hyaluronic acid filler, we use hyaluronidase carefully and conservatively. The area is delicate, so we often prefer to treat gently and review rather than do everything at once.

Once things settle, we'll talk about what, if anything, should come next. Sometimes supporting the cheek, as on our cheek filler page, gives a more natural result than re-treating the under-eye. Sometimes skin quality treatments or simply leaving the area alone is the best choice. Our feature on under-eye filler alternatives explores this, and our tear trough treatment page explains when filler is a good fit. Read what to expect when dissolving filler for the step-by-step, or see our filler correction page for our wider approach to fixing filler.

A Note on Urgent Symptoms

Sudden pain, skin colour changes or any change in vision after filler need urgent medical attention. Contact your injector right away or seek emergency care.

Why Clients Choose SKINFIDELITY for Corrections

SKINFIDELITY was founded by Master Nurse Injector Shelby Hall, and corrective work has shaped how carefully we treat every client. We look at the whole face, respect your anatomy and build gradually. We'd always rather do a little less and review than take away what makes your face yours. And if we don't think a treatment will help you, we'll say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can puffy under-eye filler be fixed?

Often, yes. If the filler is hyaluronic acid, it can usually be dissolved. We'll assess what's causing the puffiness first, since not all puffiness is from filler.

What does the Tyndall effect look like?

A bluish or grey tint under the skin where filler sits too superficially. It's usually improved by dissolving the filler in that area.

Is dissolving under-eye filler safe?

When done by an experienced injector after a proper assessment, it's a well-established treatment. We work conservatively in this delicate area and review your health history first.

Should I get my tear troughs filled again after dissolving?

Not necessarily. Many clients do better with cheek support, skin treatments or no filler under the eyes at all. We'll recommend what suits your anatomy.

How long does under-eye filler last?

It can last much longer than many people expect, sometimes years. That's one reason we take a conservative approach in this area.
