Uneven or Lumpy After Fat Dissolving? What's Normal and What Can Be Done

Fat-dissolving injections use deoxycholic acid, known by brand names such as Kybella® or Belkyra®, to break down small pockets of stubborn fat. Swelling is expected, and the area can feel firm or lumpy for a while as your body clears the treated fat. But if your result still looks uneven once you've healed, or you were treated elsewhere and aren't sure what's normal, here's what you need to know.

Healing comes first. Many lumps soften on their own; the rest deserve an honest assessment, not a guess.

What's Normal After Fat Dissolving

  • Noticeable swelling for the first several days, especially under the chin
  • Tenderness, bruising and temporary numbness
  • Firmness or small lumps you can feel under the skin as the area heals
  • Gradual change over several weeks rather than an instant result

Results typically take four to six weeks or more to show, and firmness can take longer to fully soften. That's why we generally wait until the area has fully settled before judging the result.

When Unevenness Is Worth Assessing

  • One side looks fuller than the other after you've fully healed
  • A distinct pocket of fat remains in one area
  • Firm lumps that haven't softened after several weeks
  • A contour that looks different from what you expected

Why Results Can Be Uneven

Fat isn't distributed evenly, and every body responds a little differently. Unevenness can also come from how the product was spread across the area, the dose used, or simply that more sessions were needed. Sometimes what looks like fat is actually loose skin, muscle bands or the shape of the jaw, which fat dissolving won't change. That's why the right diagnosis matters.

How Uneven Results Can Be Improved

Once you've healed, we assess the area at rest and in different positions. If a residual pocket of fat is the cause, a further, targeted session may help even things out. If the concern is skin laxity, structure or neck bands, we'll talk about other options, such as treatments covered on our double chin page, or facial balancing to support the jawline. If something needs a physician's assessment, we'll refer you.

Note that in Canada, deoxycholic acid is approved for fat under the chin; other body areas are off-label, which we discuss openly. Learn more on our fat dissolving page and in our guide to fat-dissolving injections for the double chin. For lumps after liposuction specifically, read liposuction irregularities. Our aesthetic corrections page covers every type of correction we see.
